Enforcement & By-Law Services - Report of Idling
The City of Brampton has an idling control by-law which has been enacted to help protect and enhance the City’s air, land, water and energy resources. This by-law was passed because idling wastes fuel and money and generates needless greenhouse gases. This unnecessary idling contributes to poor air quality, affects public health and results in faster wear and tear of vehicles. According to Natural Resources Canada, 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than it takes to restart an engine.
This by-law limits motorized vehicles from idling for more than three (3) minutes on City of Regional roads and on municipal and private property. Some situations, such as being stuck in traffic because of weather, traffic or mechanical difficulties over which the driver has no control are exemptions. However, idling in a drive-through lane and idling to warm up a vehicle in the winter or let the AC cool it in the summer are not exceptions
