By-Law and Enforcement Services - Exterior Offence

Exterior offences on a private property include but are not limited to:

  • Peeling paint, on wood and metal surfaces.
  • Porches in disrepair.
  • Roof in disrepair (e.g. shingles blowing off the roof, curling shingles).
  • Broken windows/doors/screens.
  • asphalt driveway that need replacing,
  • Rodent infestations in yards or house.
  • Insect infestations in yards or house.
  • Downspouts draining water into a neighbour’s yards (downspout is pointing directly to neighbour’s yard)
  • Light pointed towards neighbours property (with the intent to view the property)
  • Extended-height fences on private property not to exceed 6 feet 6 inches (2 metres) in side and rear yard and 3 feet 3 inches (1 meter) in the front yard.
  • Parking of inoperative vehicles –(e.g. Unlicensed, no valid license plate or in disrepair)
  • Graffiti anywhere on private property

These offences apply to residential, industrial or commercial properties and to vacant properties. Nothing can be stored on vacant lots (construction materials and equipment, debris, vehicles etc.)

Tenants should first raise concerns with landlord/property management, if no action is taken then the City will investigate.

If property owners or renters pursue a complaint about a deficiency for which they are responsible, the City will issue an Order against the home owner.
