Parks - Tree Pruning & Inspections
The City of Brampton’s Forestry team undertakes maintenance of trees, including pruning and removal, on trees located within City-owned property such as parks and boulevards in-front of homes. Members of the public are not permitted to conduct any work, including pruning, on City owned trees.
You do not require permission to prune your own, privately-owned tree. Please use the Tree Preservation By-Law (linked below in the “Related Information” section) as a guideline when pruning your private tree.
Possible Reporting Scenarios:
- Sick/Dead/Unhealthy City tree
- City Tree needs pruning or a trim
- Tree stump/peg removal
- General inquires about pruning
Expected Service Levels:
- For Sick/Dead/Unhealthy Trees: Inspections are conducted approximately 90 days from initial request
- Tree Maintenance: Can take up to 12 months after inspection
What happens after I report my concern or submit my request?
- A Tree Inspection will be conducted approximately 90 days from the initial request
- The Inspector will leave a "Tree Door Hanger" on your door to let you know the inspection is complete
- The Necessary work will be scheduled for completion

Example Scenario: Tree Pruning Cycle/Timeline
- May 2025 – Jane calls 311 to request a tree pruning for the tree in her front lawn. During the call she is provided a COBI number which she will use to track the progress of her request. Jane is also told by the operator that an inspection will be completed within 90 business days.
- July 2026 – The inspection is completed, and it is determined the tree needs to be pruned. Jane is notified that the tree pruning will be scheduled to be completed within the next 12 months.
- July 2026 – The working crew prunes the necessary branches. The pruning request is completed, and Jane’s COBI number is closed.
Example Scenario: Tree Removal Cycle/Timeline
- June 2027 – Jane calls 311 again, to request that the same tree is removed. The inspection process is the same and she is given a new COBI number. A few weeks later the inspector concludes a removal is needed, due to the health of the tree. The inspector issues a removal request for the work to be completed within 12 months.
- June 2028 – The working crew completes the removal of the tree leaving a tree stump. The working crew submitted a request to remove the tree stump. The stump is scheduled to be completed within the next 12 months.
- June 2029 – The working crew removes the tree stump.
- August 2029 – An Inspector goes back onsite to verify if a new tree can be planted in place of the previous tree. If a tree can be planted, a planting request is submitted for the following spring/fall.
- April 2030 – Jane's new tree is planted/watered, and her COBI number is now closed.
